Paul Wells offers the NDP some friendly Advice

Advice I whole heartily endorse…
If I were a left-of-centre party desperately seeking concrete differences with the Liberals, I’d be awfully interested in the case of Omar Khadr, the former child soldier whose abuse at Guantanamo Bay has by now been amply documented.
Indeed the Khadr case is just one more example that illustrates, despite appearances, that the Liberals and Conservatives are basically flip sides of the same coin.
This should, it seems to me, present an opportunity for the NDP, who could say — truthfully — “The Liberals let this happen and the Conservatives refuse to bring it to an end.”

Actually, the NDP has been pushing this issue for months, along with (rare) like-minded Blocistas and (rarer still) Liberals.
Joe Comartin, Viviane Barbot, and Dominique Leblanc had a multi-partisan press conference in early 2008 demanding Khadr’s repatriation.
After some persistent work by Mr. Comartin, all three opposition parties passed a non-binding resolution on the last day of the past Parliamentary session demanding Harper exercise his responsability as PM and do what every other allied head of government has done: bring our citizens home from the legal and moral blackhole that is the military prison at Guantanamo.
Wells should stay on top of his issues more. The tapes were big news, but this has been happening for some time, mainly due to the efforts of our distinguished MPs messrs Comartin and Marston.
Your point about federal liberals being value-less hacks is well taken though. Nobody heard a word about this human rights affront when Dion was in cabinet.

Comment by Dirk July 17, 2008 @ 5:02 pmI hear everyone calling Omar Khadr, the former child soldier. First was Canada at war and was he defending his Country. Secondly, how many more Canadians are presently Child Soldiers? Maybe we should be evaluating all the Islamic Families who are teaching their children these practices, as they should be charged with child endangerment. See what the uproar would be if the Canadian Government went into Islamic homes and assess what the children were being taught. Finally, how is the Khadr family earning an income in Canada presently?
