No matter what one thinks of the Omar Khadr case,or Khadr as a person. One under lining principle can not be ignored.
The Canadian governments has an obligation to protect and ensure, that the civil/human rights of all Cnd citizens are protected.Indeed it’s shameful that the Harper government continues to ignore the plight of one of its own citizens.
Particularly in light of the fact that even the U.S Supreme court, has ruled against Gitmo, calling it unconstitutional.
The Canadian government can not pick and chose which Canadians are,or not, protected by Cnd law.
The very idea runs contrary to the notion of Canadian democracy and the rule of law,one of it’s most basic tenets.
Also as the much respected Romeo Dallaire points out we are talking about a child soldier, which entails added responsibilities.
UPDATE;
U.S military lawyer (JAG) Lt.-Cmdr. Bill Kuebler attacked the military commission that will try Khadr in October…
“Military commissions aren’t designed to be fair. They’re designed to produce convictions.”

Maybe this picture of Omar will change your mind; taken from a family photo collection that
was seized. He’s a sniveling little psychopath jihadi and he deserves no sympathy. He would
lop your head off and laugh the whole time he was doing it.

Comment by Troy July 17, 2008 @ 5:54 amThe kid has been brainwashed since he was 9 by his father, and he falls under the definition of a child soldier – and we , Canada, have signed on to the international protocols regarding the treatment and rehabilitation of those child soldiers. Furthermore, he has been held illegally at Guanatanamo for 6 years without charge – and even under the kangaroo courts that Guantanamo are, the US has refused to prosecute him until now. His habeaus corpus rights have been violated as ruled by the US Supreme Court.
If there is evidence against him, produce it in a REAL court in Canada, allow him and his defense team to properly defend themselves.. and if he’s found guilty, let there be consequences then, but with the International Protocols on child soldiers to be taken into account.
You conservatives are supposedly all for law and order.. there is nothing “lawful” about what has happened to Omar Khadr.

remember Troy we are a democracy where the rule of law applies.Your personal feeling about Khadr,no matter how despicable you or others believe Khadr to be Khadr’s rights as a Cnd citizen take precedents.
Comment by Dirk July 17, 2008 @ 1:00 pmIt is through this principal, that the rights of all Cnd’s are ensured. This is how a democracy functions.
As for the picture you linked to so what, even American soldiers take “trophy” pictures,if indeed this is what the picture is about.Gee for some “unexplained reason” war, death and destruction seems to bring out the worst in people.Particularly young impressionable males.
Gitmo detainees are not considered “soldiers” they are considered “criminals”.
Comment by blanks57 July 17, 2008 @ 7:15 pmOmar Khadar is really a child-traitor to this country.
Dallaire is still a Canadian-crackpot like he always was, like “Steve” and the rest of the “leadership” in this pathetic country.
Wow… blank57 your a ” sharp” one.All though you should know, your comment says more about you than anything else.
