Arctic Sovereignty

As usual Canadian,American and European countries continue to over look the rights and concerns of their indigenous populations.

With all the recent talk and “controversy” in regards to Arctic sovereignty,particularly in the case of the Northwest Passage.

All sides have yet to reach out or even talk(nothing new there)to the local indigenous populations.

As Duane Smith,Canadian President of the Inuit Circumpolar Council,has pointed out …

“Inuit have lived on the land and seas of the Arctic for thousands of years and according to Canadian, American and international laws, we have fundamental rights that cannot be ignored,”

Two of the claimants,Russia and Canada,had also just recently refused to sign the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.In hindsight and with the Arctic sovereignty “controversy”in mind.One must wonder if the decision not to ratify,might be more than just a coincident.

But then again it’s not like any of the countries have ever recognized indigenous rights now or in the past,Canada included.
